Awesome review. However, you guys barely talked about any of my favorite scenes in this movie. There was so much cool skateboarding detail and texture in it. This was an incredibly influential film for almost every 90s skater I know. And the big chase scene at the end?! OMG!!!
I guess I was too young to have given the Vietnamese Anti-Communist Relief Fund that much thought. I will say that I think it’s just a MacGuffin that got too much attention from the screenwriters. It’s one of those things that needs either more or less explanation. I say less, because the plot of this film really is “A Brother’s Justice” and the point, I think, is that growing up entails cleaning up and accepting some responsibility, while retaining that unique part of yourself, rather than completely conforming.
I liked you skater/poser story, Joel. I coincidentally just watched these hilarious video from Danny McBribe on that topic, yesterday. They were cracking me up. Recommended for your next YouTube rabbit hole.

I’m glad Jessy brought up Gator’s backstory and Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator from 2002. It’s not great, but it’s probably in the Top 10 of skateboarding documentaries. I actually did that list once on MSC, but I don’t remember where I ranked this movie.
I hope you don’t ever review Airborne, but I hope you guys have Mattroid on, if you do. He was exactly Seth Green from that movie when I met him.

And I was happy Jessy brought up the Gator info too. I honestly didn’t remember that little bit ‘o skater history. And while you may not remember where you ranked The Rise and Fall of Gator (I just checked MSC and couldn’t find it in the search), I guess the real question is where did Dogtown and Z-Boys land in your list?
Oh, and Airborne WILL BE reviewed at some point. Of course, I have to accept the very real possibility that Darrell may never speak to me again. But thanks for the heads up about Mattroid. I’ll make sure we have him on for that one. 🙂
AAAAHHHHHH!!! I love this movie! This movie inspired me to start skateboarding at 11 and I spent the next ten years of my life ditching class and running from cops! So Amazing, my favorite line: “They killed my brother!” BAM epic skate session from Rodney Mullen. This is easily my favorite movie of all time, just due to it’s influence on my life. Great review!
